birthday cake

My son’s birthday is early in September, so we always schedule a party later in the month, to avoid those back to school stressors. I know the last thing I would want to do right off the bat of a new school year is worry about birthday party shopping!
Bubba is the big 9 this year, almost double digits!! So he wasn’t thrilled about any of the birthday party options I threw out, until I mentioned laser tag.
“Yes!” he practically screamed when I pulled that out of …

school supplies

By JO WATTS; blogger
Alrighty, so we are officially starting the third week of school! Routines are returning, bedtimes are actually being observed and homework has made a big comeback.
The first few weeks of school are always the hardest. It’s still nice outside, extremely nice this week, and it’s hard to keep little bodies in their seats and engaged in the discussion when outside calls. I don’t envy teachers their jobs! That’s why I don’t home school, I would make a really crappy teacher. I would …

Susan Spicka

So it’s been a bit since my last blog and I apologize for that! Seems like with the summer winding down so did my time! Between a camping trip, back to school and a really nasty rash on Bubba, there hasn’t been much time for anything!
But one thing I’ve been working on has been a really special project for me, which is this blog entry. I’ve always been pretty interested in politics, as I really feel that voting is one of our responsibilities as …

Hubby and I are pretty well-seasoned travelers. We’ve been all up and down the East Coast, out to Vegas, to the Caribbean, Mexico, and my favorite, Key West.
But there’s one vacation experience we’ve never really done together: CAMPING.
Now I was a Girl Scout for a couple of years when I was a kid and did the whole “spend a couple of days in a tent eating burned on the outside raw on the inside” hot dog deal, but we’ve never really camped before.
That’s all about to …

Blogger Jo Watts found that a summer camp was just the ticket to keeping her son content over summer break.

By JO WATTS; blogger
Believe it or not, my kid has actually been asking how many days until he goes back to school. Seriously.
In his words, “It’s not that I don’t like summer, really I do, but I really miss learning stuff.”
Obviously I don’t have a normal kid.
But I think what he’s really missing is time with his friends.
He’s been in Chemistry Camp this week at Shippensburg University. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s for kids 8-10 and is a day-long, week-long camp.
Dr McCann and Dr. …

“If you see someone being bullied, make it stop. Why is that so hard for us to do?”
― Susane Colasanti, Keep Holding On
There has been a lot of attention on the story of a bus monitor who was bullied by middle school kids. The 68-year-old grandmother was tortured by the words of 12-15 year old children to the point she broke down in tears. These same teens captured the bullying on their cell phones and posted the embarrassment to YouTube, for the world to …

movie watchers

By JO WATTS; blogger
Pop culture today is full of references to movies, both classic and cult! I didn’t realize how saturated it had become until the other day when my husband and I were joking around in the kitchen making dinner and were casually throwing movie lines around.
Bubba sat at the counter, perplexed. “What do you mean, ‘anybody want a peanut?’ What are you talking about?” I collapsed in giggles, but then shock set in. He’d never seen the movie I was referencing, one …

tug of war

By JO WATTS; blogger
Can you believe that the end of the school year is only a few days away? It seriously seems like I was just scribbling Valentines at 3 a.m. just yesterday!
So summer is almost here, and the heat is here early. Pools and sprinklers look like they are going to be not only welcome, but necessary, if this heat keeps up!
But along with heat comes the question, what to do with the kids?
I’m a working mom, and I don’t get a summer vacation so I worry that …

My kids’ ages are a little spread out – 4-years and two months to be exact – and I’ve always thought that it was good that they were a little further apart.
Bubba was pretty self-sufficient by the time Baby came around and was actually a fantastic little mommy’s helper with her. He was great about fetching and throwing away, and he loved to help her with a bottle.
As she got older, he was still awesome. He was patient, kind, loving, and
protective, everything a big brother should be. …

So spring has sprung incredibly early this year.
The flowers probably aren’t even going to make it to Easter!
And it’s brought out the allergies. Our house is no exception. We’ve all had the sneezes, but for Bubba and me, it’s been full on attack. The tissues, the allergy meds, the windows closed, and daily dusting have all become part of my day.
But we can’t stay inside when the sun is shining so bright and the days are so warm and the lure of the soccer ball calls.
This year …
