In just a week Christmas will be coming, if the Mayans and their predictions don’t get us first. If you still haven’t decided what to ask Santa for, or you’re stumped about what to give someone else, I have some suggestions for you. These gifts are specifically for college students and young adults in their first apartment:
1. Tiny tunes – stereos are too big and boom boxes haven’t been cool since John Cusack was a twenty-something. Nearly everyone under 30 owns an iPod, MP3 player or some other …

Can you feel it in the air? Its that time of year at colleges around the country. Classes are ending, finals are coming up, and the holidays are coming up quickly.
In between packing up your stuff to trek home for a month and cramming 15 weeks worth of class material into a few nights of studying, you might also be stressing about what presents to buy for those holiday parties. Hanukah begins this weekend, and even though Christmas is still three weeks away, most college students celebrate …

Sometimes it doesn’t always feel like I’m lucky. I’ve never won the lottery (well okay, I did win $5 on a scratch-off ticket once), or found a $20 bill on the sidewalk (just a few pennies). But when I think about bad things that could happen, such as a house fire, or having a serious injury or illness, I have to admit that I’ve been lucky enough to never experience something terrible. I also used to be able to say that I’ve never been the victim of bank …

I’ll be honest, I was not really looking forward to discussing this week’s topic on fitness. I mean, we all remember gym class from high school, right? Boring, unless you were one of those super-athletic kids. (Big surprise: I was not)
I thought it was great that Shippensburg University didn’t require students to take any physical education classes. And it was also pretty cool that my freshman residence hall had two elevators, perfect for avoiding all those stairs on my way to my fifth-floor dorm room.
What wasn’t …

College cuisine is practically its own food group. Ramen noodles for dinner, late-night pizza deliveries while watching your favorite TV show, beer and wings with friends while watching your favorite team…am I making you hungry yet? While I was never hungry in college, I wasn’t very healthy either, and I’m almost certain that the local Chinese restaurant had my regular order memorized by the time I graduated. To help you avoid my mistakes, I’ve combined some research with some of my own tips to help you balance college …

As I’ve said before here, one of the many great things about college is being able to try different things and have new experiences. Most students are trying to find out who they are, what they like, what they’re good at, and who else out there is in the same situation. Grab your roommate or a new friend from class and try something new this semester.
Consider trying a new craft or two on Thursday evenings this fall at the Thought Lot, located on Garfield Street in Shippensburg. …

This week I’m writing to you all the way from the beach down in North Carolina. Yup, this is what the “real world” is all about, kids: sun, sand and sleeping in. Totally kidding! But vacation is a perk you’ll learn to savor once you’re a full-time employee. While I’m enjoying my week of vacation, read on for ways you can have a lot of fun at Ship.
So you’ve been in class for two weeks, and by now you’re probably starting to realize that there isn’t a ton …

Sarah Gilbert dressed up as the Shippensburg University mascot Big Red for a football game.

I love this time of year for a couple of reasons: the weather is cooler and the trees will soon be turning pretty colors, football season is coming (Go Eagles!), and several big holidays are coming up quickly.
Looking around Shippensburg recently, the town is definitely changing. The population of the area has increased by several thousand in just the last week or so as the new semester gets underway at Shippensburg University. The beginning of a school year is a great time to make a fresh …
