Meg B. buys a new pair of Reef sandals at the start of every summer. The old ones become her farm shoes.

I thought I would format this blog post a little differently this week. First, because I have a BIG blog post in the works but can’t reveal it just yet and second, I like to make lists. Although, I often fail to remember where I put the lists and then forget to follow through with the lists. Oh well. This week’s post will be a list of 15 things, items, tidbits, and scandalous gossip about The Farm and it’s inhabitants that you may or …

An Amish buggy is parked outside of Rachel's Country Store, a favorite shop of Meg B. and her farming family.

Around our neck of the farmland, there are a few places that have become a regular part of our farming life. (Just a note, I am writing this post without endorsement from these fine establishments.) But if I were to put my seal of approval/stamp of awesomeness it would be on the following stores. The owners of these stores have gotten used to our quirky family and the occasional parked tractor in their parking lot.
One of the first places that we discovered when …

Meg B. thinks her own farm boy, Buck, makes his tractor sexy -- like in the hit Kenny Chesney song.

This post was inspired by a article published online by eHarmony and Business Wire. It listed the top 15 reasons why you should consider dating a farmer. Considering online dating is the way to go anymore when searching for your future mate, Buck and I actually met online through Match.com and I can testify to the sincerity of the folks online.
Now, there is a site specifically for farmers-only called Farmers Only.com. And if I can remember some of my favorite trash TV …

The barn took on many blue hues before a "dark blue color that wasn’t too purple and wasn’t too gray and wasn’t too blah blah" was painted all over.

And the building saga continues, but with a twist. All of the aforementioned projects were given a little bit of decoration and plans made to finish them up with a lovely coat or two of paint. Our first painting project to tackle would be the barn. But that first meant picking out a color that everyone could agree upon. Which meant arguing for weeks on end. Dad Villa wanted red. Mama Hen wanted white or red. Buck wanted gray. I wanted …

These are the wooden slats that Bear and I removed from the summer kitchen.

You thought I was kidding about the title? I do not jest – we have a TON of building projects that are going on at all times.
Thankfully Dad Villa has a nicely organized garage of man tools in which to complete these projects. Although when we first moved, it was a nightmare. Someone, who shall remain nameless, literally dumped all of the random tools, hardware and other building accoutrements onto a single worktable in the garage. Anytime we needed a screwdriver or …

Dad Villa builds a gate with his "helpers" Glory and Spirit.

Anyone with a farm will tell you that it is life of repairing leaky hydrants, mending broken fencing, and dealing with plenty of splinters.
I had a vision in my mind of what I wanted The Farm to look like in a projected few years. My hope was to close my eyes and wiggle my toes and bam! Instant perfect farm! Not even remotely close. There were additional buildings that had to be removed or sold to open up the property but the …

The interior of the barn, as it was before any demolition and new construction.

In my family, it was required that you know how to use a hammer prior to learning how to walk. You should also be knowledgeable about the difference between a straight, Phillips, and star screwdriver – Dad Villa likes to give pop quizzes.
It seems we were born with the uncanny ability to dissect an item in a store and blurt out the phrase “I can make that.” It’s very common to find paint color chips in the house, car, and any coat or jacket …

This is the outcome of "shedding out" a horse.

Whether or not you like it, the weather has made these past few weeks a rollercoaster ride of sunny highs and rainy lows. Now, I may have a few graduate classes under my belt that specifically deal with climate and weather but I still become super frustrated by the lack of cooperation on Mother Nature’s part. Why can’t she listen to the calendar (which is screaming spring)! I want 55-degree temperatures that make my paddocks actually look like solid plots of land, I want to …

Copper and Big Mike

By MEG B.

And the story continues onward! My last post told the history of my first two horses, Glory and Spirit. Even though you aren’t supposed to love any of your “children” more than the other, I can say that those two hold a little bit of a larger part of my heart.
But I did have to make quite a bit of room in both heart and home for the next horse, Big Mike. We decided to get Mr. Biggles (one of his many nicknames) …

Meg B. took her horses, Glory and Spirit, away from a negative atmosphere and put them in a loving one at The Farm.

Have you ever seen the research done on birth order and the effects upon individual personalities? Well, according to people who really should find a hobby beside studying birth order, your personality is a direct connection to the order in which your parents choose to have the stork deliver you.
I personally feel that these studies are more or less the equivalent of horoscopes –- if you put faith into the words on the page, you will be able to find some kernel of truth hidden …
