On September 17, 2012, a valued member of a local family went missing. Athena, the husky pictured here, got scared in a storm and was lost. And, even though her family has done all the right things, she remains at large today.
Hope remains however, as she has been sighted a few times near a trash dumpster at a trailer park off Warm Spring Road in the area of Hamilton Elementary School in Chambersburg, Pa. Unfortunately the land owner where she has been sighted …

People love to give their pets treats, and the reason is obvious. No creature is more grateful for a gift you give than a dog with a cookie or scrap of meat. But today I want to caution you about what you are giving your dog as a reward or just because. Some treats are KILLING dogs! And what burns me is the FDA knows it but isn’t DOING anything about it. Since 2007 the FDA has issued three warnings but NO recalls …

It takes more than two healthy dogs to breed responsibly.

By JENNIFER TOMLINSON; blogger
One of the hardest things to do when you are a responsible breeder is encourage others to breed responsibly as well. So many people come up to me as I walk my dogs and tell me how they want to breed or already have bred their dog, and when I really want to grab them by the throat and shake them into sensibility, I know the smarter thing to do is to educate them gently. Sometimes even that doesn’t work.
Breeding dogs responsibly doesn’t …

A lot of people who want to get a dog, and want to do it right, ask me how they can recognize a good breeder, or how to tell a reputable rescue or shelter from a sham one. My answer is to go look, and just look. Don’t go hoping to bring home your new family member. If you think that will be too hard, leave all your money, credit or debit cards and checks home. The goal of your first visit should …

Gonna depart from the topic I intended to cover because there’s something I want to cover that could make everything else I have to teach a moot point. That topic is the proposed changes in the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service that loom on the horizon.
The United States Department of Agriculture is in charge of, among other things, regulating breeding of animals for commercial sale, including pets. One of its branches is APHIS. They do pretty much what their name implies. They inspect animal and …

Doogie

By JENNIFER TOMLINSON; blogger
Hi again. Sorry for the lapse last week, but life happened when I was busy making other plans. All disasters appear to have been dealt with, so let’s take up where we left off. The question was, “Am I ready to own a dog?”
As already mentioned, one of the top reasons dogs wind up in shelters is “I don’t have time for my dog anymore“. That is followed closely by “I’m moving”, “I can’t afford to feed him or take him to the …

In the next few entries at Bark Place, we’ll discuss how to know when you are ready for a dog. Today we will explore how to know if you have time for a dog.
One of the most common reasons dogs are surrendered to shelters is “We don’t have time for our dog anymore”. If you are contemplating getting a dog, consider some of these things:
Am I aware that dogs have various exercise needs, and that I’d have to make time to meet these needs?
Am I …

In my younger days, I spent countless hours on the back of a horse. I have many years of experience with quite a few species, but my most in depth experience is with canines, …
