Chambersburg man killed in early morning crash in Southampton Township

SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP – Police have identified a Chambersburg man as the victim in a crash early this morning near Shippensburg.

Charles Smentkowski, 53, of South Main Street, Chambersburg, was killed when the one-vehicle crash happened just before 4:45 a.m. near 1317 Ritner Highway, Southampton Township, Cumberland County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Smentkowski was driving north when he traveled off the road for unknown reasons and went into a field off the western berm.

The vehicle struck a mailbox and then slid sideways into a telephone pole impacting the driver’s door.

Ritner Highway was closed until 8:50 a.m. Penelec crews responded to the scene to stabilize the pole.

Police were assisted at the scene by Shippensburg Fire Department, Fire Police, Penelec repair crew, Cumberland County Coroner’s office.

The crash remains under investigation. The driver was not wearing a seat belt.
