Gift cards to popular stores, restaurants available through GBLUES; holiday order due Dec. 7

Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School’s current fundraising initiative allows its families to raise money for the school without bearing the burden that comes with typical fundraising.

This school year the lab school at Shippensburg University began using the Grandoise Gift Card Fundraising Program, said Heather Wadas, publicity coordinator for the GBLUES PTO. Through it, people are able to buy gift cards to any of a number of chain stores and restaurants, and a percentage of each gift card purchase will go back to the school.

Percentages returned to the school vary between two and 13 percent, depending on the company.

Gift cards are available in set denominations, again depending on the company.

Orders are due Dec. 7 for a special holiday order. Gift cards will be available for pick-up Dec. 14.

Typically, orders are due the last Friday of each month and orders come in about two weeks later, Wadas said.

Wadas believes the fundraising program is more efficient than other options since participants can use the gift cards to buy things they regularly need. It also is beneficial for special occasions.

“That was something, making sure people had the opportunity to use something they would use anyway and that would benefit the school,” Wadas said, explaining a reason why the program was chosen.

“A number of people have commented to me how easy it made shopping for them and getting more their buck,” she added.

The gift card fundraising program has been in effect for just a few months, and so far the school has raised more money than expected, Wadas said. The amount raised was not immediately available.

“We don’t necessarily have a set goal. It’s a new program and we’re kind of testing it to see,” Wadas said. “So far the response has been very good.”

That’s especially a good thing for GBLUES since the PTO pays for mostly all of the educational experiences and field trips students participate in as well as equipment and other supplies they use, Wadas said.

An order form — which includes a complete list of participating businesses, gift card denominations for each and the percentage each gives back to the school — is available here.
