Susan Spicka announced Thursday that she is seeking the Democratic nomination to represent the 89th District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

She announced two weeks ago that she would seek the 33rd Senatorial District seat held by Rich Alloway, R-Chambersburg. The redistricting confusion changed her plans.

The state Supreme Court last week threw out the redistricting boundaries that placed Spicka’s home in the 33rd. The court has not issued details of its order, but many expect that corrections to the redistricting plan will not be approved until after the April 24 primary election. Nominating petitions are due Feb. 16. Candidates for the state House need 300 signatures. “We’re all in,” Spicka said. “If I can’t run, that’s the way it has to be.”

Spicka, who testified against the proposed redistricting, remains in the 2001 boundaries of the 89th House District, where she has lived nine years.

“I’m excited to be running in communities that I know so well and where I have established deep roots,” Spicka said.

The House seat is currently held by Rob Kauffman, R-Chambersburg.The district includes portions of Cumberland and Franklin counties and overlaps portions of the 33rd Senate District in Franklin and Cumberland counties.

“I know Rob Kauffman and his record well,” Spicka said. “He’s a nice person, but unfortunately he’s just spent too much time in Harrisburg. He’s forgotten that he is supposed to be working for the people in the 89th District and representing our interests.”

Spicka, a former public school teacher, co-founded last year Education Matters in the Cumberland Valley, which raises awareness about public policy impacts on public education and encourages community members to support public schools.

She lives in Shippensburg with her husband, who teaches at Shippensburg University, and their two daughters.

“A month ago, I decided to run for office so that I could provide leadership on the issues that matter to the people of our communitiesfighting for tax fairness so that working people don’t shoulder more than their fair share of taxes, ensuring our public schools are adequately funded, creating good jobs, and fixing our crumbling roads and bridges,” Spicka said.

“The map might have changed, but the issues remain just as important. I’m ready to go to Harrisburg and to be a strong leader fighting for our families and our communities as the next representative of the 89th District,” she said.
