SU to host MLK celebration Jan. 18, 19

SHIPPENSBURG, Monday, Jan.9 –Actor Daryl “Chill” Mitchell is the guest speaker Jan. 18 as part of Shippensburg University’s 16th annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the theme of “Remember, Reflect, Engage.” In addition, the university will also have its annual March for Humanity Jan. 19.

The events are free and open to the public.  The schedule is:

Daryl Mitchell

Jan. 18: An Evening with Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, 7 p.m., Ceddia Union Building multipurpose room. The title of his presentation is “Personal responsibility and accountability.”

Mitchell was a successful musician-turned actor who won roles in hit TV shows and more than 15 feature films. In 2001, a motorcycle accident paralyzed him from the waist down and put his dreams on hold. Best known for his roles as Dexter Walker on The John Larroquette Show, Leo Michaels on Veronica’s Closet, and Eli Goggins on Ed, Mitchell advises other wheelchair users to hold on to something they believe in. While continuing his acting career, he also serves as the minority outreach spokesperson for the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

Jan. 19: March for Humanity, 3:30 pm CUB MPR with Dr. Therman Evans as keynote speaker who will speak on “Dreaming without shackles.” The event is sponsored by the university’s Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and the African American Organization.

Evans, a physician and pastor, is a graduate of Howard University where he received both his bachelor’s and medical degrees, according to his website. He also studied and earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in theology from the United Christian College of New York.

He is founder and CEO of Whole Life Associates, former vice president and corporate medical director of Cigna Insurance and Healthcare Corporation, as well as the national health director and Washington bureau chief for the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Operation Push.

Dr. Therman Evans

Evans has published more 30 articles in various health journals and newspapersand for 10 years hosted a 2-hour radio show called “Lifeline” on WHAT 1340 AM in Philadelphia. In 1998, he was appointed and later formally installed as pastor of Morning Star Community Christian Center in Linden, N.J.
