SHIPPENSBURG, Wednesday, Jan. 11 — Shippensburg University recently honored employees for their achievements and years of service, including presentation of the Employee Recognition Award.

The Employee Recognition Award is given for innovative ideas, problem solving, team effort, customer service, and community/volunteer service. Ten nominations involving 52 employees were reviewed. The recipient of the 2011 award is Janice Allen, a clerk typist in the counseling & student personnel department.

According to the nominating information she has constantly worked beyond what is required to assist the department in an effort to recruit and retain students. She also volunteered to assist other departments in registering first-year students. Allen spends considerable effort in assisting students not only in her department but in other departments about their plans and assisting students in their navigation of barriers to attendance. She constantly reminds students to ensure they register for classes, helping them with their schedule, and is always available to answer their questions when needed in timely manner.

She puts students’ needs before other responsibilities of her job and not only works with students, but is also very helpful with new faculty members in orienting them with the department. “She is known for going the extra mile on her own for each individual who walks into her office on a daily basis. She takes a personal interest in each person who needs her,” according to the nomination information.
