A 25-year-old Shippensburg man who told police he “gets accepted better by the younger girls” is being charged with assault and corruption of minors for having sex with a 14-year old girl he found on Facebook.

Michael Eugene-Curtis Ridley, 25, Shippensburg , is being charged with aggravated indecent assault, statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors and indecent assault for an alleged encounter with a 14year old girl Dec. 16-17 at an apartment in Shippensburg .

According to the affidavit, police were notified Dec. 18 of a possible sexual assault when Ridley’s brother, William Ridley of North Washington Street, Shippensburg , told local police his brother Michael Ridley had sex with a 13- or 14year-old girl in his apartment. Shippensburg Police obtained a search warrant for the property and seized evidence at the scene.

Michael Ridley went to the police himself on Dec. 21, saying he wanted to talk, because “when you hide or run you get more time” and that he “needs help.”

According to the defendant, he got to know the victim through a friend after he asked the friend if he knew of “any girls who want to have sex.” The friend showed him a profile of a girl on Facebook and provided the contact number. Michael Ridley first approached the girl by text message and he told police that when it came to the girl’s age, he was “not sure exactly, but was told that she was 19 years old.”

He said he went to her Facebook profile but she did not have her age listed. Michael Ridley also said that when he first met the victim he asked her about her age and she told him she was 19.When asked by police, Michael Ridley said the girl did look younger than 19.

According to the affidavit, Michael Ridley told police he had reservations about the girl’s age and that he should have asked for identification.

Michael Ridley told police he had sex with the girl twice – once at a friend’s house and once at his brother’s apartment, where Michael Ridley had been living for three or four weeks prior to the Dec. 16 weekend. He described for police the activities leading up to the encounter at the apartment.

During an interview with the victim, she told police that she met Michael Ridley on Facebook, and that she accepted his friend request on Facebook. She said this gave Michael Ridley access to her age, including the day, month and year of her birth. She told police that at one point, at a friend’s house, she told Michael Ridley she was 14 and he told her he was 20.

According to the victim’s statements to police, the couple had sex more than twice, and on one occasion at Michael Ridley’s brother’s apartment he had sex with her after she told him no.

According to the affidavit, after the incident was reported to police, Michael Ridley told the victim he would tell the police that she was 19 years old “so he would not get in trouble.”

Michael Ridley was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Harold Adams in Shippensburg with bail being set at $75,000. He was in Franklin County Jail for a probation violation as a result of this case and was returned there.

A hearing is scheduled for Monday.
